Braxton's quickie for the day...
Email question: I occasionally use e-stim for lower back pain. The highest intensity that I can tolerate is 3 on a scale of 10, yet I have heard of people who had no trouble maxing out the intensity. What gives?
There's no doubt that the tolerance for low-voltage current varies widely between individuals. To add further to the conundrum, you will find that your personal tolerance can vary from day to day. It has been widely observed that your mood can also be an influence: the more relaxed you are, the higher your tolerance.
For a full appreciation of all the variables which come in to play, I modestly recommend reading Currently Aroused, but I would like to point out a frequently overlooked factor: the size of the conductive surface. Let's use e-stim pads as an example. If your intensity limit happens to be 3 with a Small E-Stim Pad, then it is probably a safe conjecture that your tolerance would increase to 5 or higher with a Large E-Stim Pad. Why? When the current is "spread out" over the larger area, you feel it less!
For sexual e-stim, we take full advantage of this principle. A Small E-Stim Pad on the glans penis or clitoris combined with a Large E-Stim Pad on the sacral nerve will offer delightful genital stimulation via the small pad, yet you will feel little or no stimulation from the larger pad.
